TypeForm – Building the next generation online forms

TypeForm – Building the next generation online forms

Be it a launch of a product, a new website, a mobile app, or may be a song, a book or a movie; anything and everything needs a feedback to judge its success, and this feedback is collected by conducting surveys and feedback forms. Nowadays, every now and then we get phone calls, messages and emails, to complete surveys regarding something or the other. Entrepreneurs today believe in consumer satisfaction and keep it as their main agenda. You not only need to know about your clients but also how you are going to keep them intact and gain more customers without losing the old ones.

But one should know that people easily get annoyed with such feedback forms and surveys; so you better keep your forms interactive and engaging. Plus one should never forget that their forms reflect the organization behind it. Although people are using many online services to generate forms and surveys, but that hitch is still lacking. We already have popular web tools like – GoogleDocs, SurveyMonkey and MailChimp in the market, but aren’t we still missing the ultimate tool, that could engage people like never before.

To bring revolution in the form building market, there is this upcoming startup from Barcelona called “TypeForm” – which has played pretty well in bringing together design, rich media & new technologies to improve the user experience of online forms. It helps you to make your forms and surveys so interesting and fun to experience that your customers would surely change their mind-set of filling “boring forms” and completing “dull surveys”. “TypeForms re-invents the forms because answering questions online doesn’t have to be boring.” says the co-founder David Okuniev.

Beautiful templates, mesmerizing themes and easy to use platform, makes this startup really appealing. To add five stars to your form, TypeForm has a super amazing feature which is yet to be revealed; it is the only service platform that can create forms which can automatically adapt to usability of any device – android, tablet, computer or anything other device.

Personally speaking, I see a lot of potential in Typeform, and I’m sure they will bring a revolutionary change in the concept of form building and conducting surveys. The market is soon going to heat up with new competitors. TypeForm is still in beta process, so lets see what they coming with.

NimbusBase – Store data for your apps on your user’s own cloud storage

NimbusBase – Store data for your apps on your user’s own cloud storage

With the demand for mobile applications increasing everyday, application developers are looking for newer ways to accelerate the development process. Even after development, considerable amount of time and energy is spent in data maintenance, security and worrying about scalability as users increase. NimbusBase hopes to make life simpler for you by taking away the problems of scaling, server management, and user privacy, radically changing how application back-ends are built.

NimbusBase helps you store data for your apps on your user’s own cloud storage. With this, you shift the burden of scaling from developer to larger companies that are experienced and technologically – better equipped. This in turn, shifts the control of the data back to the user thus alleviating security concerns on user data. Also, you don’t have to do any tail work as data server setup. By cutting the server out of the process, product creation becomes easier, saves server cost and precious time for developers and designers.

Currently, the product runs on HTML5 and Dropbox. Nimbusbase has also integrated Backbone.js so that you can easily convert any Backbone apps to be on top of NimbusBase. Building using HTML 5 ensures your data is accessible on all the devices, a user owns.

NimbusBase does not host anything. It is not an application or web server. What NimbusBase does is, it allows you to store a user’s private data from a HTML5/JS environment. Most of the time, this means you need to already have a way of hosting a static html page.

The online tool today supports a lot of use cases, especially for developers who want to develop apps that works across devices:

 • Saving progress data for single player games.
 • Personal productivity apps. Like Evernote, Clear, or Wunderlist.
 • Apps where data privacy is important. Such as medical history or diary apps.
 • Offline+online apps. We are one of the few data syncing engine that works offline and then syncs data online.
 • In its Beta, NimbusBase was started by Ray Wang, the tech brain and Alex Volodarsky, the biz pro. Currently, they support private data storage and hope to include public data and private shared data for the apps very soon. They also plan to work on integrating with more backends so any type of apps can be built on top of NimbusBase.

The comprehensive learning material on their site makes it easy for anyone to get started. If you are an app developer, head over right now to check it out.

Float – Scheduling and Organizing gets easy

‘Success and excuses do not walk together.’ In order to achieve great heights you need to make sure that all the problems, difficulties, errors are sidelined. It’s easy to create a team but to manage each of the team-mates according to their schedule isn’t simple. ‘Scheduling done right’ can clear ways to many opportunities and help perform the best.

Running agencies, studios, and firms becomes a bit more fluid when you can assign all your members the tasks according to their skill at one time, at one place. FLOAT is useful in this context. It helps you to schedule the time and work for each team member for a particular time period, thus reducing the daily work tasks. This also helps to concentrate on company goals better and not spend time everyday on setting agendas.

This web-app keeps many plans available for us as per our needs with minimal charges so that it’s pocket-friendly for the users together with a 30 days free trial. Float has a special name to address the members of the schedule i.e. ‘Admins.’ The account owner, who creates the account can transfer the responsibility of assignment to ‘Super Admin’ or other admins whenever necessary.

[vimeo width=”602″ height=”350″][/vimeo]

Additionally, it has an option named ‘task’ on the schedule list which gives you a clear picture of all the projects given to each admin at one glance. To make it more flexible Float allows you to reassign the task or update your schedule as per your work demands. The weekly schedule can be mailed to the members by choosing a simple ‘send team members schedules’ making it easier for the team-mates to make plans. There’s a time limit of eight hours for each admin which can be increased if needed, this will be notified by a red line showing the overtime hours.

Not just work or tasks but holidays and ‘personal time off’ can be assigned here too! That’ll be a sigh of relief for the members (I know).

This year the weekend ventures, Mumbai was held at a very cool startup campus called The Playce. The event started in the evening of 25th of January 2013.  The first day was all about sharing your ideas and forming teams. There were close to 20 participant teams, who were given a time of 60 seconds to pitch their idea to the gathering. Then there was a time slot of 30 minutes given for interaction and voting. During this time the participants interacted with the people personally and answered queries, at the end of which people voted for the ideas on which they would like to work on during the event.

There were some great ideas covering a variety of different topics from gaming applications to new age banking. They also showed a video clip which included a very innovative method of pitching so people learnt along while having fun. Rajesh from Weekend Ventures explained the process with interesting examples drawn from his previous experiences.

Weekend Ventures

From the ideas pitched, top six were selected to be launched by the end of the event. The idea – ‘The Weekender’ (booking villas, bungalows at weekend getaways near Mumbai) topped with ten votes. The runner up was a innovative idea of bringing your product to the local customer via localized ads with the newspaper at a much lesser price than your newspaper and a greater reach.

Weekend Ventures - Pitch Deck

Even if your idea did not come in top six you could still go ahead if you could manage at least two more team members to work on your idea. After the announcement of the top voted ideas there was another 45 minutes time slot to decide your team or convince participant to work on your ideas.

The next day will see the participants building up a prototype of their idea with the chance to interact with the mentors. The first day ended on a very satisfactory note and built up great expectations for day two.

Woolor – A collection of Indian web-based companies

Woolor – A collection of Indian web-based companies

Google has become a religion for internet users where every query is solved by searching for it online, and if you don’t know the answer, Google it! Be it buying movie tickets, shopping online, applying for jobs and most importantly hunting for services that are not only efficient but also cater to the requirements of the user. We all want to try the best, but the moment we hit that search button, we are flooded with several alternatives. Checking each and every platform one by one is quite time-consuming as well as a complex method.

Woolor, a new online directory for Indian websites, is so far a good initiative for all this mess. Better described by the founder, “Woolor is a start-up which aims to organize Indian web based companies in a structured manner making the information freely accessible and useful.”

Woolor - Collection of Indian Websites

The online app is simple to follow and presented in a very orderly manner. Integrated into various sections, depending on the category the website is catering to, Woolor makes it easier for the users to find out exactly what they are looking for in a fraction of seconds.

Lately, due to the impulsive growth in the Indian startups and especially the online businesses, an online business directory (with good tweaks) is certainly a niche worth targeting. Right from YourStory Pages to Startuppo, and many others in between – what matters more is the ability to deliver the maximum content about the company’s background with the extra chunks about the attached networks.

Currently, the community is moderated by a support team, to keep a regular check on the updated information and the companies waiting in the queue. We wish the team all the best for its future endeavors.

Did you check out Facebook Perfume? Spray Up, It’s new and refreshing anyone can use

Facebook Perfume

If, as the old expression goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then the top brass at brands such as Nike, Sony and Microsoft must be blushing like crazy. Approximately seven percent of world trade is in counterfeit goods, according to The International Chamber of Commerce and 40% of brands counterfeited are composed of a list of only 25 brands. That’s $350billion a year that could be funnelled through legitimate channels and into the hands of companies that invest in their development and promotion.

That counterfeiting is a criminal activity that can have tragic consequences is not in dispute. What is in dispute, however, is that counterfeiting is not always damaging to brands and can actually be leveraged to a brand’s advantage. Counterfeiting can give brands access to new markets and be a benchmark of a brand’s health. It can increase a brand’s awareness such that when the economic climate of a country or an individual’s improves, sales migrate from counterfeit to original. And it can also compel the authentic brand owner to protect, innovate and expand its products, services and markets to keep ahead of its imitators and squeeze out the competition.

Taking a look at Indian scenario, I still recollect that during my school days, we were passing by our local market when we heard someone shouting Shaktimaan papad le lo! (For the uninitiated, Shaktimaan is a Indian superhero and the person was selling papad using Shakimaan’s name). I laughed my heart out at the idea. Whether you like to call it a marketing genius or a cheap imitation is up to you.

Now we have moved on to a new era where the focus has moved on from Superheros and Television to Internet and the web giants like Google and Facebook. And we already know of people cashing on the popularity with Google Pani Puri centre and Facebook restaurant. But if you think this happens only at the street-side vendors, think again. Yes now you can buy such items at your nearby store just like a mall, well almost like a mall. Ladies and Gentleman, Here we present Facebook Perfume:

The fun part is you can make as many lists as you desire, of different genres, containing innumerable movies in each. The ‘add a film’ button helps your followers to keep track of your movie- line and read your take on them. There remains to barrier to the number of times you wish to update your ratings and flip through the list of movies you have watched.

Letterboxd provides the platform to watch movies via iTunes, Amazon and Netflix. The ‘activity dashboard’ keeps track of all your interactions which will help you remember all your cross-references in content, among your group. The site plans to introduce paid accounts down the line, but there’ll always be a free option for all the moviegoers.

The platform is in its public beta stage – makes all your diary content visible except the watchlist and curated lists that are marked as private. This keeps your privacy intact. Even your Twitter or Facebook friends could be connected to your profile if they are using Letterboxd to make a cooler hangout cyberspace. It’s a great way to recommend movies socially and keep the wished vs. watched lists of movies.

Give it a spin, and let us know what do you think about it.

India’s most popular local search provider, Just Dial accused of cheating Beauty Parlour owner

India’s leading local search provider, ‘Just Dial’ catering for about 57 million customers, across 2000 town and cities along with its MD Venkatachalam Subramani, directors Venkatachalam Krishnan, Ramani Iyyer and eight others had been accused of cheating the owner of a beauty parlour, Madanmohan Khade and causing him a loss of Rs 8,800 as per the FIR registered inThane in between December 2011 and April 2012.

More than 145,000 paid advertisers use Just Dial all over India as the popular platform to popularize their products and services. Khade had also planned to boost up his business by advertising via Just Dial, and set up a contract of three months on a trial basis.

The company never displayed 50 photographs of the parlour on their official website, as promised to Mr Khade, after he paid them the cheque of Rs 6,618. Being dissatisfied by the services, Mr Khade didn’t extend the contract with them.

After a few months, Khade gradually discovered that a monthly amount of Rs 2,200 is being deducted regularly by Just Dial from his bank account via electronic clearing service. He alleges Just Dial for engaging a person who grabbed his signature the ECS form without his knowledge, as complained by his lawyer, Rajesh Kakad too.

Initially Khade visited the Thane police station who refused to register the FIR, then the issue was taken into court, which directed the police to accept the FIR. The company has been booked under the following sections of 406 (breach of trust), 417 (punishment for cheating), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50), 463 (forgery), 464 (making a false documents), 465 (punishment for forgery) and several relevant sections, but no arrests have been made so far.

However, it is needless to say, that Just Dial refutes all the charges, and claims them to be baseless. According to the deputy chief financial officer, Mr Srinivas Koora, Mr Khade had initially had tied up a contract of Rs 24,000 with just Dial in December 2011. At that time, he himself had signed the ECS form and accepted to pay monthly installments for nine months. In April 2012, Khade suddenly decided to terminate the contract and accused them as cheaters. Koora also adds on that such an attempt is clearly to damage the reputation of the company and managing director.

Brad Feld, tells Startcup his tale of venture, investment, risks, missions and motivations

Brad Feld

Every entrepreneur needs an investor and every investor needs an investment. In a heart to heart conversation with Brad Feld, we learn more of a startup’s life who made it real big. Feld, tells his tale of venture, investment, risks, missions and motivations.

Believer of bootstrapping, Brad is one of the managing directors at Foundry Group, a venture capital firm that invests in early stage software and IT companies. He is also the co-founder of TechStars, a mentor-driven accelerator, author of several books and blogs, and a marathon runner with a vision of developmental enterprise.

Brad Feld during TechStars investment demo day

You have a creative edge and an entrepreneurial edge, which defines you better?

I think I’m a blend of both. My mom is an artist so I’ve always been inspired by creators. I’m not artistic or musical, so at an early age I started writing computer software. I loved the process of creating something from scratch, which led directly to my role as an entrepreneur, and now a writer. I’ve also always been incredibly independent – I don’t really care what other people think. Instead, I’m obsessed with creating things I’m interested in, and learning whatever I can.

Amongst all your investments which have proven successful, which one of them was a high risk venture?

Almost all of them. I invest at an early stage in a company’s life – often when it is just a few people and an idea. My goal is to invest in entrepreneurs who can create enormous companies, and help them on the journey.

What do you look for, in a startup, which makes it worth investment?

People and product. First, I look for people who I want to be partners with for a long time. Then, I want to understand the product they are creating, and want to see that they are obsessed about the product. This obsession is critical – if it’s a neat product but not something they think about every waking minute, then it’s not going to be interesting enough to me. A great example of this is Bre Pettis and MakerBot. Bre is completely and totally obsessed with 3D printers and creating a set of 3D printers that everyone can have on their desk, just like they have with 2D printers (e.g. laser prints and ink jet printers).

What was ‘your’ first startup?

Feld Technologies. I started it when I was 19 at MIT. I had a partner, Dave Jilk, who joined me a few years later. We built a software consulting firm that was self-funded (we started it with $10). By 1993 we had a $2m company with 20 employees that we sold to a public company.

Brad and David - Founders of Techstars

You’re associated with startups in more than one ways, what is the strengthening strategy and motivation behind it?

I love to play a strong supporting role with the entrepreneurs and management team. I like to say that I work for the CEO to do whatever he wants me to do to help him win.

Brad FeldWhen you started back in 1987, what hurdles did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of the beautiful things about starting a company when you are young is what you DON’T know. Dave and I pretty much didn’t know anything except how to write software. We were good at it, and able to solve business problems, so our services were quickly in demand. But we literally knew nothing about building a company. We read whatever we could get our hands on, were pretty fearless in hindsight with what we tried, communicated regularly about everything, and found some great mentors early on who were incredibly helpful to us.

You have such an enthralling ladder of achievements, what is your motto in life?

Learn constantly. Give before you get. Live for today – you don’t know when the lights are going to go off. Love the people around you.

Where do you see yourself after 7 years?

I’ll be in my mid-50’s. I expect I’ll still be doing many of the things I’m doing today – investing as a VC, helping entrepreneurs, writing, running, and spending time with my wife Amy.

What is your opinion about “Bootstrapping”?

It’s awesome. Dave and I bootstrapped Feld Technologies. I have enormous respect for entrepreneurs who bootstrap.

What’s the story behind the ’50 states marathon mission’?

In my mid 30’s I gained a lot of weight and was struggling with chronic gout. I used to run track when I was a teenager so I decided to start running again. I picked a big goal – run a marathon in every state. I’ve done 23 now!

What do you think about entrepreneurship, precisely talking about the Indian space?

I don’t know enough specifically about entrepreneurship in India to have a strong perspective, but I have a deeply held belief that you can create great new companies anywhere on this planet. And it’s exciting to see – from a distance – many of the companies being created in India.

Any message to young entrepreneurs out here in India?

Just go for it!

VoiceBunny- A tool that pays you for your voice

Instant messaging, message packs, Hike, WhatsApp and more, have made the world a very virtual place. You are seldom found calling people with such hiked call rates. May it be a birthday wish, wedding cheers or cocktail invitations, personal invites have obliterated. From this arose the need of rapid communication for personal and business development.

VoiceBunny is an online app that aspires to connect people with great voices to those – who need them.

Why do you need good voices? When it comes to business the scope is unbound. From radio announcements to reception calls, a beautiful voice gives an awesome kick start. A pleasing voice is able to grasp attention, no matter where it is heard, may it be podcasts, toys, video games, mobile apps, e-greetings, e-learning etc. A personal message has the amiable convincing power, that helps in crowd sourcing, in this case though, ‘crowdvoicing’.

VoiceBunny Fast and professional voice overs

While calling a marriage bureau to setup a perfect match, you like to hear a voice that is charming rather than disgruntled. What more? You even get paid if you have the talent. Yes! VoiceBunny allows you for a free signup and pays you even for auditioning, if approved.

VoiceBunny has an API interface, what does that mean right? It means that your computer does all the hard work and you reap all the awards. Far cooler and easier that a user-interface.

When condensed, VoiceBunny has a complete customized structure flexible with your own rates, convenient timings, recording from home studio, projects of choice and remuneration. Nothing could be a more win-win tool.

Late Labs – Trading Code for Equity

Hardcore coders or hackers are an enthusiastic lot; symbolizing effervescing energy. But having the talent does not confirm ‘incoming- dinero’. Always on the look- out for more challenges, projects and enterprises, they fail to connect with the much needed resources.

Late Labs

Apart from those looking for work, there are people who are looking out for ‘people’ to do their work called Hustlers.  Late Labs brings these hustlers and hackers together creating an amazing web of ideas and resources, giving you codes and apps imbibed with creativity and zapping efficiency.

Late Labs is a crowd sourced community of cool coders. The online platform is a launch pad for developers to apply their time in a collaborative way and in return earn equity. Equity is the new cash!  It takes a long time to get any returns, if any at all, but when it does, it reaps big rewards. Late Labs is pretty much a summation of resource –oriented venture, which provides technical documentation, project management, infrastructure, design, distribution and dinero to make projects a success.

Equity for all the involved parties is calculated based on an “equity fairness calculator” (being worked on currently). As a developer you can connect using your GitHub account or by sending your resume and portfolio through mail. You need to apply for each project individually. The Late Labs team selects you, a budding developer, after reviewing your code. Once selected, you will have access to full project details and including the contract (sounds exciting!) with details of your equity as predetermined by the project lead. Equity will be awarded to the developer after the code is tested and released to the public in beta form. It thrives as much on simplicity as on its challenging aptitude.

Brainchild of co-founders, Justin Elof Johnson and Nathan Ross, the startup has got an enthusiast response with 3.5K people signing up within a month of launch. Late Labs will be running the process, and not the idea originator. But it also has an option for submission of an idea. The concept is similar to Ahhha but unlike them Late Labs only crowdsources coders and not the entire product development process.

Are you a hacker and hope for being a part of the next big thing? Do your efforts aim at trending ideas and do you dream of working with the brilliant minds of Silicon Valley? Here’s your chance.

Sizzlepig – Resize multiple images (yes, entire folders) right before your eyes

Images have become the basic mode of crowd sourcing but Photoshop may not be everyone’s forte. Now, if you have a presentation in an hour and you still have two batches of hundred pictures each, to be processed, edited and re-sized, then even Photoshop wouldn’t suffice. Designers and developers have a tough time converting multiple images, a hundreds of them at a single shot, to aesthetic images without affecting the pixels. Moreover, precious time is wasted as available market-scripts require a lot of time, testing and tweaking.

Sizzlepig is an online image resizing tool, redefined with human touch. It creates multiple sizes for multiple images and is the solution, by far, for creative imagery. The tool is undoubtedly a better approach for less work, more productivity. While, content gives you more readers, pictures play a major role in user’s engagement. And that’s where Grit Design, a Detroit based team of like-minded troops, built Sizzlepig to get more than just graphics, with an ability to preview your resized images even before they’re created. What an idea (whoa).

The website is very visual and works with Dropbox sync, making it efficient, easy and responsive. You create an account, sync it with your Dropbox folder and you’re set to roll. You can start by uploading your images by creating a project and the online app will store the processed images automatically, if you chose so.

With no scripts required, the tool has vibrant frames, allowing you to input the dimensions you need (for the exported images). What makes it more interesting is its “one-change” function which updates all the images just by adjusting the original one. This is certainly an important aspect for cropping, retouching and framing multiple images – just like a cake walk.

Sizzlepig is an endeavor to make image fine tuning easy without multiple scripting. So, if you need to resize multiple images (yes, entire folders) right before your eyes, give it a shot. No scripts, no guesswork.
